We've redesigned our website to improve your experience. You may see some pages with the old design, until we’ve updated them all.

What we’re doing to protect your money

We’re committed to keeping your money safe. And they’re not just words. Here are just some of the ways we’re investing time and money into staying secure. Whether it’s online, in branch, or in the way we look after your data.

Ways we protect your money

  • Your account(s) is protected by several layers of authentication, which are unique to you.
  • Online sessions will automatically expire and log you out, after a period of inactivity.
  • We provide an extra layer of security for certain activities.
  • Strict security procedures are followed whenever your information is collected and stored.
  • We will always verify your identity before discussing or disclosing confidential information.
  • Access to your online account will be locked out after a certain number of failed access attempts. You will need to provide key details, or call us, to unlock your account.
  • We ask you to choose an image that you’ll see each time you log into Skipton Online, so you’ll know. It’s the genuine Skipton Building Society website.
  • Our websites are regularly tested.

  • Our network, computer systems and websites are tested regularly by specialist, external security organisations.
  • They are testing for any security vulnerabilities.
  • We use what we learn to continually improve security.
  • Any pages which display or collect personal data are encrypted, which makes it virtually. Impossible for someone else to read.
  • The data is stored in a secure area that can only be accessed by authorized personnel.

  • If we need to contact you online, we’ll use secure messaging on your online account. We’ll only send an email when we need to let you know there’s a message waiting to be read.
  • Emails are not a secure way of sharing information. Third parties could intercept, access or alter information sent by email. Skipton Building Society does not support the use of email to provide sensitive information. But we recognise it may be the quickest or easiest solution for customers in some situations.
  • The Society is not responsible for and cannot accept liability for any damage resulting from emails being sent to, or received by, the Society.

Phishing emails

A phishing email is an email alleging to be from a UK bank, building society, or other legitimate company encouraging you to:

  • visit a fraudulent website
  • invest money
  • reveal personal details

Skipton Building Society, and other Skipton  Group organisations, will never send emails asking for confidential information or security details. You should not respond to emails asking you to reveal personal information or passwords.

Please be vigilant. If you are unsure, or worried about any communications that seem to be from Skipton Building Society, please call our helpline on 0345 266 7754.

Money laundering, terrorist, and proliferation financing

Before we allow you to apply for a mortgage or open a savings account, we conduct checks to verify your identity. This is a regulatory requirement and helps us to prevent fraud and money laundering.

In line with legislation and regulation to prevent and detect money laundering and/or fraud, the Society  conducts transaction monitoring. We do this is to protect victims and identify suspicious activity.

The Society will not tolerate any use of its products or services to facilitate money laundering and/or fraud.
