Investment Planning

If you have long-term goals and aspirations, investing your money could give you a better chance of reaching them. We’re here to help you work out if investment planning could help you achieve a brighter future.

How can you make investment plans?

Like many people, you probably have long-term ambitions and they’ll usually come with certain financial considerations. Investing your money could prove a successful way of achieving your long-term goals.

Whilst putting your cash into savings accounts is a very sensible approach, savings alone could limit how much your money is able to grow. Investing offers the potential to achieve stronger long term returns, so long as you are intending to invest for at least five years and are comfortable with the risks involved.

Why invest your money?

  • Opportunity to achieve stronger long-term returns.
  • Potential to grow your wealth for you – and loved ones – to enjoy.
  • Feel more confident about your future.
  • Range of options to suit your personal needs.

Important information

By investing with our advice, our aim is to grow your money by a greater extent than is available through cash savings accounts to help you achieve your goals. Stock market based investments are not like Building Society savings accounts. The value of your investments and any income can go down or up and you may get back less than you invested.

Why investing might be right for you

Having a good level of savings for the future is great. It can help you with short-term goals like going on holiday or buying a car. It’s also useful to have savings you can fall back on for just-in-case moments – like an unexpected bill.

When inflation is running high, it’s difficult to grow savings over the long-term. And that’s why investing offers you the opportunity to achieve higher returns over the long term.

Our financial advice service could be right for you if you have at least £20,000 to invest or £500 on a monthly basis. To have a better chance of making more of your money, investing means putting your capital at risk. There are different levels of risk you can take, and our advisers can help you consider an approach that’s right for you.

What is Investment Risk?

At Skipton Building Society, the job of our financial advisers is to help you understand how risk and reward works, the benefits, and of course, the pitfalls. We do this by providing recommendations tailored to your circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Skipton, we could help you build an investment portfolio suited to your circumstances. This typically means recommending you invest into a range of funds. These will invest into assets like shares, corporate and government bonds on your behalf.

A balanced mix of assets helps reduce the level of risk your money's exposed to because if one asset class or area isn't performing well, other assets might still be generating strong performance to offer you smoother returns.

First of all, you might like to know there are no upfront costs. We could help you build an investment plan and outline what the charges would be before you commit to taking up advice.

  • We offer different levels of financial advice to suit different circumstances. Our initial charges start at 2% of the amount you invest.
  • If your situation is more complex, the initial charge could be up to 3% of the amount you invest.
  • You need at least £20,000 or £500 per month available to invest to get financial advice with Skipton.

Our in-house team of research experts assess the market to develop a panel of investment options. We'll use this panel to build an investment portfolio suited to your circumstances.

As a restricted financial adviser, we don't advise on as many areas of the market compared to some financial advisers.

  • We prefer to focus our expertise on the areas we do know.
  • This includes meeting the organisations and fund managers to fully understand the strategy.
  • That way, we can be even more confident recommending options suitable for your needs.

If you already have investments, you might find it valuable if we take a look at them for you. In most cases, we can review them to check how they’re measuring up to your needs.

What was once the best place to invest won’t always remain the case, especially if your goals have changed since you set them up.

If we conclude you might be able to achieve better returns, we’ll explore options for you to consider – with no pressure to act.
